Close to Deir el Medinet and Deir el Bahri (the Temple of Hatshepsut) were the villages of Gurna (Qurna). From North to South they were named Dra Abu-elNaga, Sheik Abd el-Gurna and Gurna Murai. By the early 19th century the villages had been settled. A vast ancient necropolis for nobles, more than 950 Pharaonic tombs dating back from the Modern Kingdom are lying beneath the houses in Gurna. The village has been moved recently to gain access to these tombs. New Gurna is now located several miles to the north. These Photographs were taken between 2006 and 2008.
