THE VILLAGE OF QURNA
Close to Deir el Medina (workers village) and Deir el Bahri (Temple of Hatshepsut) were the villages of Qurna. From North to South they are named Dra Abu-el Naga, Sheik Abd-el Gurna and Gurna Murai. By the early 19th century the villages have been settled. A vast ancient necropolis for nobles with more than 950 tombs dating back from the New Kingdom lay beneath the houses in Qurna. The villages have been destroyed and moved recently to gain access to these tombs. New Qurna is now located several miles to the north.
